Teeth whitening are ideal for people who have healthy, unrestored teeth and gums. Individuals with yellow tones in their teeth respond the best to these products. The effectiveness of the toothpaste that claims to whiten your teeth depends on how long you brush your teeth and also how often you do it. However, over-brushing may result in loss of tooth enamel. Enamel may weaken to the point where plaque and bacteria can easily damage the teeth. In addition to this, individuals with sensitive teeth may not be able to use these whitening toothpastes.

Teeth whitening toothpastes contain a whitening agent such as carbamide peroxide or sodium tri-polyphosphate. It also contains an abrasive agent such as silica, which does work in removing stains and whitening the teeth. The abrasive agent is mainly responsible for the faster result you see with whitening toothpaste. The toothpaste also contains whitening agents; though the concentration is low and the bleach does not come in contact with your teeth long enough to do its work. Like regular toothpastes, teeth whitening toothpastes also contain some amount of fluoride to help to reduce dental caries. Some brands of toothpaste may also contain potassium nitrate for dental hypersensitivity. Additional ingredients include pyrophosphates or zinc citrate to stop the buildup of tartar.

Another thing to note here is that teeth whitening are not permanent. People who avoid food and beverages that cause staining may be able to wait one year or longer before another whitening treatment or touch-up is needed. The degree of whiteness may vary from individual to individual depending upon the condition of the teeth, nature of the stain etc. The availability and affordability of these products make them fit for everyone and their budgets.
